Japan-born and CalArts-trained, Kenji Yamaguchi has been a longtime fixture on the local dance scene, his virtuosity most often showcased by choreographers Frit and Frat Fuller. More recently, Yamaguchi has emerged as an outstanding choreographer in his own right. At the Palm Desert choreography festival last November, the duet Asura was a standout both for its evocative choreography exploring ideas of loss and reunion and for Yamaguchi's astonishing performances with Kana Miyamoto.
For "Spirited Astray", each piece has a story and it grows up from the picture from which each dancer draws it live.
